Eternal Life and Eternal Separation

I've often wondered exactly what the Tree of Life really represented in the book of Genesis. Certainly, after Adam had fallen into disobedience God protected the Tree of Life from Adam. God made sure Adam would not be able to eat from it and live forever in a fallen state. That's an interesting thought in itself. A man who ate of a forbidden tree, now considered dead or seperated from God, was denied access to a tree that would give him eternal life. Eternal life! Can you imagine eternal life seperated from God? Living forever, but an enemy to God! Unsaved, but alive forever.

Although the bible never confirms Adam had already eaten from the Tree of Life, it is possible he did when we consider the length of years he lived and even those of his progeny. However, as the years of life continued to shorten over the centuries, it makes me wonder if eating from the Tree of Life required a steady diet and not a one time meal. The free gift of eternal life was there in the garden and disobedience restricted father Adam from continuing to eat from from it.

Jesus came to give us eternal life. Shall we continue to eat from him to live, or is it a one time meal? Is it possible to partake of his life, live forever and be seperated from God through our disobedience? Yet, one thing is for certain, the Tree of Life is still present in the very place where eternal life is...
